Ethiopia's Capital Market Sees Major Expansion with New Licenses

March 20, 2025

The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) has significantly expanded the nation's financial sector by granting licenses to five new capital market service providers. This pivotal move marks the introduction of Ethiopia's inaugural investment banks, a development poised to reshape the country's economic landscape. Among the newly licensed entities are CBE Capital S.C. and Wegagen Capital Investment Bank S.C., which will function as investment banks, alongside Ethio-Fidelity Securities S.C., authorized as a securities dealer. Furthermore, HST Investment Advisory Services PLC and Equation Securities Investment Advisor PLC have been licensed to provide securities investment advisory services.

This expansion is a substantial leap forward for Ethiopia's capital market, which previously relied on only four licensed providers, all operating solely as investment advisors. The introduction of investment banks and securities dealers is expected to inject much-needed liquidity into the market, enhance capital-raising opportunities, and attract a broader range of investors, both domestic and international. During the licensing ceremony, ECMA Director General Dr. Alebachew Nigussie emphasized the critical role these new entities will play in shaping the future of Ethiopia's financial markets. She stressed the importance of upholding integrity, professionalism, and a long-term vision to ensure the market's sustainable growth and success. The ECMA is now overseeing the growth of a more diverse and robust capital market, which is a key part of Ethiopias economic development.
